Object First Vs Scality

Post by TDG »

Hi my supplier can supply a hardware appliance with approx 64TB storage & a 3 year deal for support and hardware for same price.
(Supermicro Hardware)
I'm not sure which one to go for Object First Vs Scality. We are a fully Veeam house
I have done few demos with Object First guys (Ex Veeam guys) and impressed with the solution they provide

Appreciate any advise

You mean they only charge for hardware while offering storage software (a choice of OF/Scality) and 3 year support for free? It's just sounds a bit "too good to be true" considering SuperMicro servers are already quite cheap. So even if they sell you the hardware at MSRP it is unclear what is the interest for OF/Scality to engage in this transaction considering how little money they would get.

This is potentially such an interesting value proposition for our users that I just want to make sure I understood you correctly. Also, are you able to share how much exactly is your supplier asking for this?

From Veeam perspective, we have had Object First in our QA labs for a while now, and Scality has literally just arrived this past week. So we will be performing on-going testing of our releases on both storage systems going forward, and thanks to that both make solid choices with reduced chance of surprises in the long run.

And we definitely have a decent number of users using both systems already, so you won't be the first. We've also seen issues in support with both, particularly performance-related at scale... so it's important to realize they are not yet at the maturity level of say Veeam hardened repository, which you can "set and forget" and never worry at least about performance or reliability. But, as you already mentioned, they do provide for a much simpler turn-key experience and let you not to worry about a few other things instead :) while closing scalability and reliability gaps is just a matter of time for any determined vendor.

Let me add, both vendors have deep Veeam experience and can guide any customer with the right sizing to avoid scalability issues. As any storage solution you need to size not only for the capacity, but as well for the IO (in this case S3 operation amount and data object sizes).

Thanks for the advise. It all makes sense. I have done a demo of OF appliance & waiting for a demo of Scality

OF 64TB 2U appliance with 3 year hardware and software support
Scality 72TB 2U appliance with 5 year hardware and software support
Both are similar price form my reseller

We are a SME and already have Veeam replication to remote DC, To Wasabi S3 and Ransomware proof SAN snapshots. All I need is a local S3 repository (Approx. 60TB)
I have already deployed the Veeam harden Linux reposityry but like to make my IT team's life easy (They don't have much Linux in house knowledge)
By going to one of this appliances just play and play & all are managed via GUI

If this is your ONLY reservation then you should consider managed hardened repository as well. This specifically aims to deliver hardened repository deployment and management simplicity for IT teams with no Linux expertise. The number of Community Preview downloads indicate huge interest from our community and therefore we want to make it an officially supported offering as soon as we address a few teething issues reported on the preview build.

This already offers a much simplified TUI today, however ultimately our plan is to have updates management and hardware health monitoring available directly in the Veeam Backup & Replication UI.
