Veeam B&R + AWS S3 + AWS VTL Gateway

Post by Nevermore696 »

Good morning!

We are looking for the options to store our backups in the cloud and we need professional advice.
Our regular Full backup is about 7.5 Tb and we are keeping full backups for the last 7 years + full backup every month + incremental backups during the month. So it's about 180Tb in total.
I'm just wondering if there is an option to combine multiple solutions in one case:
For example:
1) monthly backup + incremental is on local storage (or S3 IA)
2) let's say 2 latest backups are on S3 IA
3) all other backups are on VTL Deep Archive Pool

I saw that for VTL we will need to upgrade our license to Veeam R&B Enterprise Plus or to Veeam Availability Suite. But I'm just curious if this combination will work or we have to consider other options.
I'll be appreciated if you can suggest any other strategies that might work better in our case.
Thank you in advance!

1) monthly backup + incremental is on local storage (or S3 IA)
Create a daily backup job, configured in forward forever incremental method with 30 points as retention
2) let's say 2 latest backups are on S3 IA
Latest not oldest, correct? Because to me it makes more sense to transfer the oldest, not latest restore points to less-frequently accessed storage type - S3 IA.
3) all other backups are on VTL Deep Archive Pool
Add VTL as a tape server, create backup to tape job, point it to it and archive whatever backup files you want to (though, it won't be a direct backup).

Thanks!

Thanks, Vladimir!

Just one more question.
Is it possible to do the same thing without VTL?
For example, I set S3 as Scale-Out or Backup repository and set lifecycle policy on this S3 bucket to move old backups to Glacier after one month. In case if I want to restore something from Glacier: I restore the full backup file to the S3 bucket and move it to a different bucket, then add a new bucket to External repository in Veeam and restore 2-3-month-old VM as usual.
Will this work or there is some kind of limitation that might stop us from doing that?
Thank you in advance!

No, without VTL, you won't be able to transfer backups to Glacier.

As to moving oldest restore point to AWS S3, check this section of our User Guide.

Thanks!

Hi guys,

The VTL completely disappeared from the comparison table of your products.
Could you please let me know which licenses are required to use this feature?
In deployment guide it says https://www.veeam.com/wp-using-aws-vtl- ... guide.html :
"1.Install on-premises Veeam infrastructure (Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup & Replication Enterprise Plus edition)".

Is it still the case?
Thank you in advance!
