Backup repository location

Post by jumbo23 »

Hello there,

I wonder if someone could tell me if the following would work?

A physical server runs Veeam B&R v7 and is physically connected to a tape device. This physical server only has two 146Gb drives in a raid 1

I will run a virtual machine solely as a Backup repository with a large volume to be used as the repository

Will that enable a disk backup to be run from the physical server hosting Veeam using the VM as the backup repository?

The second question - can I then run a Veeam backup job to tape using the backup repository on the VM?

All this will be running over a 1Gb network

Many thanks

Yes, will work fine, however note that storing backups on VMFS is not considered as best practice (just FYI, since I'm not sure what kind of volume you are going to use for repository). Also, having proxy server as a VM on the host will allow for better performance with your setup.

Thanks for getting back Foggy

Just to confirm then...

The physical server running Veeam, that has a physical connection to the tape device can connect to a virtual machine containing a backup repository and then copy that data to tape (the tape backup effectively running over the network)? This would then provide me the D2D2T solution I am after?

Thanks again

Yes, see this existing topic as a confirmation ;) > Tape location in v7
