Feature Request: Point in time recovery for SQL databases

Post by electricd7 » 2 people like this post

Hello,

We have asked for this feature for the past 2 years now and each time are told that it "is in the pipeline." We desperately need the ability to restore a SQL server database with the NORECOVERY flag so that we can replay the t-logs back to a a point in time. Restoring SQL to the last full backup is not an enterprise solution. We currently have to use other products to accomplish backing up and restoring our SQL environments which require point-in-time recovery since this feature is not supported by Veeam. There is a published microsoft API which would allow you to just set a switch at time of restore leaving the DB in NORECOVERY mode so that t-logs can be replayed against it. Please let me know the roadmap for this feature. Thanks.

Hi Chad, unfortunately we do not publish roadmap. All requested features are prioritized on the number of factors, particularly on the amount of requests and the presence of workarounds. If you search this forum for NORECOVERY, you will find very few similar requests in the past years (with your earlier thread being one of those few). And speaking of urgency, most people who have this requirement are able to do this differently (you have been doing this for 2 years now). So, this feature was simply pushed out by other, more requested features with no workarounds. However, I can confirm that we still have this feature in our plans, and are intended to deliver it, so that you do not have to use other tools. Thank you for your feedback!

You can add one to the requests for this feature. Not being able to roll forward a backed up DB using transaction log (.trn) files (stored elsewhere other than in the Veeam Backup) is a frustrating omission from the feature set in my opinion.

+1 here, too. Totally agree that for SQL Server recovery, point-in-time recovery is crucial for many companies. Just add it already!

+1 for us as well. We have several databases we leave in standby mode for various reasons. Our old backup solution (commvault) had this option and we have just come across the lack of no recovery option with Veeam. A restore with commvault would take an hour or so but with the veeam workaround the same restore is taking 4 hours or more with all of the various steps we have to take. This would be a well worthwhile update.

Hi Richard,

What Veeam version are you using? Transaction logs backup, as well as individual database recovery to a point in time is available in our current release > Planning for Database Restore.

Thanks!
