COPY JOB through WAN Accelerator is very slow

Post by kumartc »

Veeam 7.0 R2
We are using many to one WAN Accelerator topology
2012 Hyper V Environment
Total size of Vms in the copy jobs 40TB and these Vms are distributed to 12 copy jobs
No of Source Wan Accelerator- 8 (10GB RAM/8CPU/225GB Global Cache size)
No Target WAN Accelerator -1 ((16GB RAM/8CPU/225GB Global Cache size)
Source repository Dell DR4100
Target Repository Dell DR4100
First time copy job is done directly without WAN Accelerator (LAN-10Gbps) and finished in 3 days. After that we configured Many to one WAN Accelerator topology with same 10Gbps LAN but the copy jobs are never completing one round through WAN Accelerators. Our aim to first create Global Cache in the target WAN accelerator locally, then move Target Repository and target WAN accelerator to offsite location and subsequent copy job at offsite

Some reason the copy job is not finishing through using WAN accelerator it is running last 6 days.
Reduced the network band width using throttling (100 mbps) to see whether that helps improve the speed of copy but no use

Any help is appreciated

You should be using the Direct Copy mode with 10 Gbps links, and your Backup Copy jobs will fly.

WAN accelerators are intended for typical, slow WAN links (links slower than 100Mbps). Your WAN connectivity is actually 10 times faster than what vast majority of shops have for local connectivity (1 Gbps) :D

Hi Gostev
Thanks for your quick reply. Our aim is to first create Global Cache in the target WAN accelerator locally, then move Target Repository and target WAN accelerator to offsite location and subsequent copy job at offsite
We thought that way we can reduce the time to time populate Global Cache in target WAN accelerator at offsite.
Whether WAN Accelerator wont work with Faster connectivity?

You don't need to create Global Cache locally like you are doing this right now. Just seed your backups to another site, and the cache will be auto-populated from backups locally in the target site (no WAN traffic, same speed).

Thanks for your prompt reply . Is there any way we can test efficiency of WAN Acceleration locally? ( like using Veeam Network Throttling).
we would like to test it locally to see how long it will take etc . Do you have any suggestion?

You can use specific software in order to emulate WAN connection, such as WAN Bridge or WANem (for more advanced emulation) to test WAN Accelerator feature locally. Also, you can emulate "target" WAN Accelerator in VMware Workstation, where it's possible to set limited bandwidth and even add packet-losses.

Thanks.
