Free ESXi as a target for replication?

Post by MarkLomas »

Hi there.

I know that in general free ESXi is not supported according to the system requirements, but does this also include using free ESXi as a replication target?

Many thanks

Hi, Mark,

Yes, it does, since VB&R stores replica restore points as snapshots and Free ESX(i) doesn't support programmatic creation of snapshots.

Thanks.

Thanks.

If I license the remote server, can it be 'standalone' (ie not managed by the vCenter?).

Scenariou is that the production environment will be running VMWare Essentials Plus, with three hosts. The remote 'fourth' host can't be managed by vCenter Essentials, so as long as it is licensed (say- standard edition) then can it be a target even if it isn't managed by vcenter?

Yes, licensed host (including standalone) can be used as replication target.

The cheapest solution would probably be using the $500 Essentials pack from Vmware.
I believe it should support what you need.

Yes, VMware Essentials is minimum supported license, as per sticky FAQ. Thanks.

[MERGED] Replicate to ESXi Free

Post by Yanish »

Hi,
Quick question,

I know that I can not backup or replicate from ESXi Free.
Can I use ESXi Free as a target for replication?
The source will of course be a licensed server.

Thanks

Hi,

No, you can't. vStorage API for Data Protection and other management APIs locked down specifically to prevent ISVs from being able to backup/manage such hosts. Also please see this VMware article.

Thank you

[MERGED] Replica ESXi License needed?

Post by skydok »

I never tried it myself so i have a small questions,

VMware License Questions:
Source Site - > 3 x vSphere ESXi with License of Essentials Plus .. Everything is ok.
Destination Site - > 1 x vSphere ESXi Free Edition ... Is supported as Target?
