is there an OVF or veeam backup proxy template?

Post by mstevens »

Looking at deploying a veeam backup proxy on each of our ESXi hosts in order to facilitate lan-free backup/replication to local storage on each host, and I'm wondering if there is an OVF template or faster way to deploy backup proxies, other than deploying a windows server from template on each host.

There is no OVF or proxy template as we cannot redistribute Windows OS.

And even if we did have those, this would make any difference in terms of speed of deployment, as once you have deployed the new Windows OS VM, actual proxy components deployment takes just a few seconds. You can certainly make yourself a template with the proxy components preinstalled if you'd like - but this will not have significant impact on the roll out speed.

By the way, this is exacty what we do.
I created a complete windows OS VM, with everything optimized and up-to-date (patches, vm tools), installed the latest proxy version on it, and created both a template and an OVA file. Then I can use guest customization in vcenter and deploy the VM in few minutes, connect it to Veeam console and if meanwhile there is a new version of the proxy, at first login it will be updated automatically by Veeam itself.

Thank you both for the feedback. Just wanted to verify before I proceeded with setting up our infrastructure.

I've done the same thing as well in order to deploy more proxies. Does anyone know if Veeam has intentions of releasing Linux based proxies?

Definitely no plans. Type "linux proxy" in the forum search for more details, we had at least a couple of discussions on this subject before.

very interesting concept...
I imagine that you have to keep a mental note as to which VMs are supposed to remain on each host?

FWIW I just have a single 6-core proxy on each host, plus direct SAN-attach of the B&R server & let the backup jobs have-at-it. I'd like to think that Veeam would be intelligent enough to balance things out sensibly but even if it doesn't, we simply don't have any kind of performance-related issues revolving around this kind setup in our environment.

[MERGED] Backup Proxy virtual appliance

Post by MAA »

Hello,

Do you have plans to release Backup Proxy as linux-based virtual appliance (ovf/ova format)?

You can find some argumentation above and in this existing thread.

[MERGED] Feature request - Veeam proxy appliance

Post by edv@rubner.com »

Hi,

Is in the future a virtual proxy appliance planned?

On the headquarter we have running Veeam Backup & Replication.
For example:
We have a small branch office with the following characteristics:
An ESXi with local HDD
A NAS for Veeambackups

On the ESXi running two small Windows server and the one of the servers has the proxy services installed.
If the server with the proxy service is not running, the technical complexity of the restore is larger.
If I had an appliance, which is small and compact, then the restore go faster.
Example:
1. Import the appliance to ESXi
2. Starte the appliance
3. Config in Veeam and start the restore...

Thanks
Greetings

+1 for a linux Veeam BackupProxy appliance

For small servers at remote outstations, with one (or 2) production VMs, the ability to have a simple/small/lightweight appliance for Veeam backups would be very useful.
Typically there isn't a spare license for another Windows VM, and it would be nice to not have yet another Windows server to manage, patch, etc...

Warning, this is not a MS vs Linux post, just saying I'm more a linux fan than a MS one...
You would have to manage and patch also a linux appliance, it's not just a Microsoft "issue".

+100 for this. Having to manage a farm of Windows servers just as Veeam proxies is a PITA. Simple, disposable Linux-based appliances would be far better.

Would like to echo the feature request for a preconfigured downloadable Linux proxy appliance. I am incredibly pleased that Veeam has provided the ability to deploy the proxy role to Linux VM and I now have CentOS and Debian VMs for that purpose. As much fun as it is to re-learn how to configure all of this, the boss prefers I get back to working on development instead of spending time "playing" with virtual server deployment :-)
