Placement of Hyper-V Offhost Backup Proxy

Veeam backup server on it's own dedicated server
QNAP TS-870U-RP NAS will be used as backup repository
2 node Hyper-V cluster with CSV on SAS SAN
2 x HP Proliant DL360 Gen8 Servers
1 x HP P2000 G3 SAS dual controller SAN

What I would like to know is where would be best to place the Hyper-V Offhost Backup Proxy.

Hyper-V offhost backup proxy should be installed on a host that is not a part of a cluster and should have the same OS version as the Hyper-V host itself.

So would you recommend installing it on a separate dedicated server? Does this server then need direct access to the SAN?

Not only I recommend, this is actually required. Yes, offhost backup proxy must be connected to the shared storage.

The HP P2000 G3 SAS SAN only has 4 SAS ports and these are all being used by the 2 HP DL360's. How would I connect the dedicated Offhost Backup Proxy server to the SAN?

If there is no technical capability of configuring offhost backup proxy (should be connected in the same way you connect production hosts), then I guess you can use on-host proxy with hardware VSS provider.

I think you can have up to 8 SAS ports on the HP P2000's, but that means sending extra ££. I will take a look at the on-host proxy with hardware VSS provider option.
