Backup Copy to Off-Site Store

Post by dspridgeon »

Running Version 7.0 of Backup & Replication Standard Edition

Backing up 2 x Hosts with 6 VM Guests to a local LAN attached Windows 2008 R2 server.

Everything running very well

Now copying the daily backups off site to a remote VPM connected NAS box

Everything going well until a few days ago when the Backup Copy job stated it was carrying out a 'Transforming Full Backup Job'

Job still running 12 hours later and only 5% thru process

Over the next month I plan to upgrade the systems to Enterprise edition and use the WAN accelerator feature to improve performance.

In the meantime is there any way to improve or stop the Transforming jon

Hi David,

What is your target storage for the backup copy job? What kind of repository is this? Windows box? CIFS share?

Thanks!

Most likely the bottleneck is target for this backup copy job, isn't it? Transform is a very I/O intensive operation, so it is normal for it to take long time if target storage cannot provide enough IOPS. Also, in case of remote backups, it is always recommended to perform it on agent-enabled backup repository (or set up a proxying server, in case of CIFS) for better performance.

Off-Site repository is a Synology NAS Device

As stated above I plan to install a Windows Server with Veeam proxies installed

Looking at the stats from the backup copy job and the speed of the site to site VPN of 20Mbps this transform process is going to take several days

Currently you can specify any existing Windows server in the remote site as a proxying server for this repository (at the Share step of the backup repository wizard). This will enable Veeam data mover agent on it and allow transform activity to be performed locally in the remote site.
