Re: [BETA] Veeam Explorer for Active Directory
I did get the same error with that file.BearHuntr wrote:My B&R server is Server 2012, my DC is 2008 R2, functional level is 2003, our domain is part of a larger Forest. I've installed VEAD on the B&R server and initiated a FLR from my DC's last backup, browse to the ntds.dit, which is in C:\Windows\System32 and left the logs folder at C:\Windows\System32 as well and I get a "Root subobjects structure not found" error. Any ideas? Thanks!
But that was not the real, used ntds.dit. Check C:\Windows\NTDS\ntds.dit or whatever path is in the registry of your DC:
Code: Select all
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters

Lars is spot on! The file you were trying to open is the distribution copy of the default directory and does not contain your domain information.

Hi Foggy,
Yes this is "our" domain controller, just not seeing our domain or OU's being listed in the tree view, I'll try this again in case I'm having an off day !

Feel free to contact our technical support in case you're not able to nail this down yourself. Just don't forget to mark the case with the [VEAD BETA] tag.

Petr, make sure the domain controller server for the target domain is accessible by the name or address you specify in the wizard.

Re: [BETA] Veeam Explorer for Active Directory
I suggest contacting support directly (don't forget to use [VEAD BETA] tag) to take a closer look at the domain topology, etc. Basically, LDAP connection to the domain controller and global catalog is verified at this step, so troubleshooting steps should include checking those at the first place (making sure no firewall is preventing them, for example).

Is it no problem to install the BETA in production? Will it be updated by the "real" install later on?

The upgrade procedure will be described in the Release Notes document, but this way will also work.

Re: [BETA] Veeam Explorer for Active Directory
I've got the same error: "Root subobject structure not found", using the good ntds.dit file (not the distribution file).
Active Directory is running on 2K8R2, 2K8R2 functionnal level.
Any idea ?

Re: [BETA] Veeam Explorer for Active Directory
Ok I will,
I managed to get it working on another DC (perhaps the fact that guest processing was disabled on the first DC i tried is the source of the problem).
But I'm facing another issue, this is a forest with three domains, one root and two childs. When openning the ntds.dit file on a child DC, I only see the root domain partition...

Re: [BETA] Veeam Explorer for Active Directory
We have a few hot fixes available by now for all commonly reported issues with the beta code, you can obtain them from support. Please do that, as this will ensure that the release code works flawlessly in your environment. And if we find the reported issue is not yet known, we will develop a hot fix and provide it to you. Thanks!

Re: [BETA] Veeam Explorer for Active Directory
Hi Guys,
I have a bit trouble with getting it working in my Environment.
When Selecting the ntds.dit I can select the Logs Folder, there I'll get this error:
- Done a Backup of a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 DC
- The Active Directory Files are located here: (verified by having a look to the Registry keys)
So when trying to add the Database to VEAD I'll insert the following Path:
- Database: C:\VeeamFLR\tdcv0012\Volume1\DATABASE\NTDS\ntds.dit
- Logs Folder: C:\VeeamFLR\tdcv0012\Volume2\LOGFILES\NTDS
When doing this, I'll get the error message mentioned above.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Marc

Re: [BETA] Veeam Explorer for Active Directory
After applying the fix (two DLLs) provided by the support everything seems ok:
- we can browse the child domain and search for deleted objects
- no more error at ntds.dit loading
We even restored an accidentally deleted computer object with no problem...and the computer was back to production with no trouble...so we guess it is perfectly working as it should.
To sum up, it is working less than 48H after openning the case with the lowest priority on a beta software....no comment
Many thanks.

Re: [BETA] Veeam Explorer for Active Directory
Marc, thanks for the heads up. We're currently trying to reproduce this in our lab, however, as far as I know, the described scenario has been verified during pre-beta testing and there were no issues observed. Probably, there're some environmental specifics that cause this behavior.

Re: [BETA] Veeam Explorer for Active Directory
As a workaround, you can currently copy all files from both locations (folders, where database and logs are stored) into a single folder and open database from there.

I have seen the same error "The specified folder does not contain valid logs."
and I have tried coping the files ntds.dit, and log files to a directory, and use that, but i still comes with the same error.
