Best Backup Type to use for Replication (non-veeam)

Post by electricd7 »

Hello,

I have a customer who has Veeam B&R installed into their environment. They have a small number of VMs which they would like to backup nightly to a local disk target. They then have a company-policy mandated replication process which will pick up that volume and ship it offsite via some 3rd party windows agent. My question is, which type of backup would be most efficient for this environment? It seems like forward incremental since the 3rd party replication piece would then only have to replicate the small deltas daily, but I am worried about then having a synthetic full every X days which would have to get replicated in its entirety. I supposed I could dial the synthetic fulls back to once a month or something to limit the amount of times this has to happen, but is that a wise choice? Looking for advice on setting this all up in a way that makes sense for local backup restores, but also makes the best of the replication which I do not control. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Chad, is the said tool capable of catching block level changes? That's being said, if there are two versions of the same file present in different locations, will the tool be smart enough to copy only delta, not the file as a whole? Thanks.

The replication piece is Seagate eVault i365. In my quick research they tout block-level delta processing technology, so I am going to say yes they would support that. Given that information, what is your recommendation?

Enable previous naming convention and stick to reversed incremental, then. This way, only block level changes will be transferred to the target location. The full backup will still need to be copied as a whole. However, with reversed incremental mode the full backup should be created on less regular basis, say, once in 1 or 2 months.

Thanks.

You're welcome. Let's know, if additional clarification is needed.

Btw, have you considered using Veeam B&R built-in replication of backups offsite using backup copy jobs? An extremely efficient way to get backups offsite with built-in WAN acceleration.

Yes...I tried that path first, but was given the "we must use this process in this environment" speech.

Got it. Then it is worth trying Vladimir's suggestion.
