Initial backup takes longer time
Hi All,
Recently we bought veeam 7 and trying to replicate our DB servers which runs on Linux (ESXi). We have three sites and we need to replicate 2 Databases once a day from one site to another. (link speed 20Mbs - MPLS). Our problem is DB size is over 1TB and initial replication takes 2days to complete. This creates one day backup loss and when it two days it will take another half day or more to backup. Above scenario when we allow all 20Mbs link. If we limit the link, it took one or two days more to complete initial backup.
My question is is there any other way to do the replication? Is it possible to do the replication to external HDD and send to the site (1hr drive) and restore there initially. Will it cut down the time?

Re: Initial backup takes longer time
Hi Thameera,
Since your bottleneck here is a slow network you can use replica seeding. You can find an article in User Guide on how to configure VM replica seeding.
This will help you to minimize the amount of traffic going from the production site to the disaster recovery site.
Thank you!

Re: Initial backup takes longer time
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. our vendor done the same. But it took nearly 1 day to re-sync for the 1st time. Will test this my self and see how it goes. Is there any other way we can compress the data before sending over the network?

Actually, the data is compressed already (you can find traffic compression option in the advanced job settings). You can try bumping the compression level. Also note that we are adding WAN acceleration to replication in the upcoming release, this should help to further reduce the bandwidth usage, thus accelerating your replication. Thanks!

Hi,
Thank you very much. Will it be available for enterprise edition?

The feature list for all Veeam B&R editions isn't available yet, but it will be closer to the release date. Thanks.
