D2D2T backup questions

Post by TonioRoffo »

Hello,

I'm pretty new to Veeam, and am now deploying my first Veeam Backup 4.1 to a production machine (going live in a few months)

All is working pretty good, tested backup (full/incremental) for 7 virtual machines, speed is great. (I'm using a VM for Veeam Backup)

Now my client wants to have additional offsite backup, so I'm thinking to go D2D2T, in the following manner, I wanted to check with you if my logic is sound:

> Nightly backups with Veeam, full and incremental backups
> This will result in *.VBK files which are my synthetic full backups (is this correct?) and *.VRB files which are "reverse diff" files
> So if I copy only the *.VBK's to tape, I am archiving my last full backups to tape (correct?)

Second question is disaster recovery, in case I lose my online (disk) backups:

> Situation: I lose all my physical machines, I only have tape left. I rebuild hardware, create a VM, create a new Veeam backup on it, and restore the *.VBK's from tape to this VM.
> Will Veeam "recognize" these VBK files, or can I let it scan for those files?

Thanks for the insight...

Hello Yves,

Yes, you're correct, if you copy the *.VBK file only you will archive your last successfull backup.

In case of disaster recovery scenario, you will be able to import those VBK files to Veeam console to do a restore, but you won't be able to use those VBK files to continue job cycle, because all the job configurations are stored in Veeam SQL DB and you should also backup this DB to save your job configurations and all other backup records.

Thank you!

Great, then I have a D2D2T solution! Continuing backup won't be needed, this is just a disaster recovery scenario.

Is there a document somewhere on how I can import the VBK's back into the SQL DB?

THanks!

Almost correct - they are reversed incrementals.

You just click Import Backup on the main toolbar, and browse to VBK, that's it.
