advice for disk rotation

Post by PapaSmurf »

Hi All,

We use Veeam's backup product and it works great.

What we want to do, however, is backup to a removable hard disk that gets rotated. I'm just wondering whether anyone has any experience with this and whether it would work well?

My understanding of synthetic backups isn't great enough to tell me whether (having copied the first vrb to each disk) each new backup will be ok and restorable? We're using vsphere 4 so changed block tracking is enabled - which may make a difference?

(Yes, I know I could test this but any experience/suggestions from others appreciated)

Hello Ben, yes the VBK backup file produced after each contains full backup of the latest state and is sufficient to restore latest state of all VMs (you do not need any other files).

As for disk rotation please refer to the existing thread:
Veeam Backup 4 & Removable Media

Thanks!

Thansk Gostev for your prompt reply! Shame your support department don't respond so quickly ;-)

I've installed 4.1 and added the key to the registry, so will see how things go. Unfortunately my restores aren't working right now (they weren't in 4 either) but I have a case open already on that.

Best wishes and kudos for a great product (until my recent restore failures)
