Backup copy jobs how many to one DR server

Post by ober72 »

HI Folks,

Is there a limit to how many backup copy jobs that I have coming into one DR server?

Thanks

Hi, Geoff. There are no know limits per backup server. In most cases, backup repository performance is the limiting factor. Thanks!

Also, how many of backup copy jobs are you going to create? And what's is the logic behind it? I'm wondering since typically we recommend to create just a few backup copy jobs, instead of creating multiple backup copy jobs (like one per source backup job, etc.). Thanks.

Well, if you want to keep a separation between jobs for any reason (access rights to different backups when mounted directly at DR site) I still see a reason to have multiple backup jobs. Also thinking about v8, encryption will for sure add additional segregation between backup files...

I found that with one big backup job there can be issues for some reason with things like failing transforms, compile FIB failures etc. Whereas the leaner jobs tend to work better but that just might be my situation. Also I ran into a real killer when trying to seed a big backcopy job of 2.1 TB, when trying to copy it over to the server I got an MS copy error, in the end had to rename the file and copy using the command line. The other issue is retention, people might want different retention times for different backups.

cheers

In this case, multiple backup copy jobs make total sense. Thank you for additional clarification.
