Free HD space trend for individual VMs

Post by readie »

Hi,
I have a couple of VMs for which I should like to analyse HD free space over the past month or two . . . I cannot find how to do this using Veeam Reporter (V7).
Should it be possible, and if so can anyone help?
Actually, should I be trying 'Business View' or Reporter?
thanks,
Bob

Hello Bob,
Yes, you need to use Reporter for it. Choose "Workspace" tab to choose among all available reports.

In a "Custom Reports" folder you can find VMware Custom Performance (or Hyper-V Custom Performance for Hyper-V based infrastructure). Choose desired period, Virtual Machine in an Object Type, Guest Disk as a Monitor Subsystem and the Guest Disk: Guest Disk Usage metric.

Also for getting Raw data you can use VMware Raw Performance Data (Hyper-V Raw Performance Data) report to get the most detailed info.
Thank you.

This might now be a feature request. Following your advice, I can get a nice trend graph of HD usage, but NOT Free Space. You may say it's similar, but I have two servers with over 3TB of used space, and less than 100GB of free space. Looking at graphs of 3+TB usage they barely move, but if I could see the graphs of <100GB free space, I would actually see it reducing (and even better if it would give me a 'predicted days till full' estimate!).
There seem to be reports which do this at the datastore level, but I would like to see at the Guest level.

Bob,
I`m glad my suggestion was useful for you.

Regarding your request, there is a tendency towards choosing thin provisioning for guest disks over thick ones. Keeping this in mind it makes more sense to follow datastore`s free space and as you mentioned Veeam One provides corresponding reports.

Out of curiosity, why do you prefer thick disk provisioning?

Thank you for the feedback!

Ah. Interesting question. It is actually thin provisioned . . . but I don't have a good method of monitoring the Windows HD free space using 'windows tools', so hoped that Veeam One might do it for me.
I'm not worried about datastores getting full - just guest OS running out of space.

Bob,

If your disks are thin provisioned, how can they run out of space?
You might want to have a warning when your VMs reach some threshold.
Could you elaborate on your need?

By the way, do you use VMware or Hyper-V?
Thank you.

One is thin provisioned (say) at 3.5TB. It's guest is using 3.4TB. The GUEST windows OS is in danger of running out of space.
I'm trying to see the GUEST OS situation, rather than the VMware datastore position.

I see your point now.

For that demand we have Custom Infrastructure report which you can modify up to your needs.
You can select virtual machine as an object and then pick the parameters you need for the virtual disks (you might need: "Name", "Virtual Disk: Is thin provisioned", "Virtual Disk:Size Total", "Virtual Disk:Size" etc.).

But it`s probably not that vivid. We will think about adding a metric Guest Disk: Guest Free Space to the VMware Custom Performance report.
Thank you for the feedback, Bob!

Thanks - the 'Guest Free Space' would be very useful.
