Restore from Removable drives

Post by KiwiJJ »

Hi,
I have used the registry fix to enable full backups to removable drives as mentioned in a previous post.

We rotate our removable drives on a daily basis.

Am I able to restore from these removable drives ?

thanks,

John

Absolutely. Due to the fact that Veeam Backup uses synthetic backup, your removable drives will always have full backup of the latest VM state. Nothing else is needed to restore. Just plug-in the drive, do Import Backup on the main Veeam Backup toolbar and point it to the VBK file on your removable drive. The backup will then immediately appear in Veeam Backup under Backups node, and you will be able to restore backup normally.

Alternatively you can also consider copying small standalone restore utility to your removable drive along with VBK each time, this would allow you to restore your backup even without Veeam Backup itself (in case you will loose it during disaster).

Thanks!

Where exactly is this registry configuration information? I don't see it on the forums with a search, in the release notes, in the manual with a search, or anywhere else! What am I missing?

Thanks! I did a forums search first, odd that didn't turn up. Is it going to be documented anywhere else?

David, we intentionally do not openly publish those hacks in the product documentation. They are designed to be distributed through our support, because they modify default and recommended product behavior, which in turn may lead to unexpected consequences like one I have described in the thread referenced above. While our support can make sure that specific mod is applicable to specific situation, and also explain potential drawbacks of using it.

That makes sense...the release notes mention the workaround though, so it would have been nice to add a note saying to contact Support for how to enable it if you're "advertising" it in the release notes :-) Thanks!
