Best Method for three copies

Post by edfops »

Our infrastructure is relatively straightfoward. We have a main physical B&R server that acts as a proxy (DirectSAN) with DAS SAS Drives. Within the same LAN, we have another physical server with slower, larger capacity drives meant to hold secondary copies to protect against enclosure failure or issues with the main server. We then have a DR site across the WAN with good bandwidth to replicate backup data.

Currently, we take a primary backup and a secondary backup within the site, and then a backup copy to the DR site using the secondary backup as the backup set. However, the secondary backup due to the slower drives is not quick enough to complete a regular backup without impacting the ESXi environment.

If we used backup copies to the second enclosure (from the regular backup set), what would be the best method to transport these to the DR site on a daily basis?

You could set up two backup copy jobs pointing to the primary backup storage as a source, one writing to the secondary storage and another to remote location. Or use some 3d party utility to copy files produced by the backup copy job to remote site.

I would rather not point the DR copy to the primary backup, as once the primary backup kicks in the following night it will kill the running backup copy. Across the WAN, the number of potential issues that might cause a slight bleed beyond the 18-22 hours available to copy it makes this cumbersome. So ideally there is some way to manage the backup set I am processing DR from.

Sounds like copying the backup copy some other way is the best method, are there any recommendations in this field?

Yes, this is the case if you're using reverse incremental backup mode.

Tools like rsync or robocopy are typically mentioned in cases like your's.

Thank you, I'll dig into that a bit.
