Backup copy size

Post by ReinhartDB »

Hi

I have a question about the data copied in case of a copy job.
I have a very simple backup job to disk. I use incremental and synthetic full.
When i monitor our incremental file size, then the daily delta is avg 10GB.

Now, we also use a backup copy job to copy our backups to our datacenter.
The data send over our wan is much larger then the size of our incrementals.

Is this normal behaviour? I use high compression in both jobs.

Thanks

Reinhart, does your backup copy job run with a daily synchronization interval?

Yes it does indeed
shoud the size of the incrementals reflect the tranfer size of the copy job?

Basically, yes. Backup copy job copies only those blocks that correspond to VM latest state and have changed since its last run. Considering that both regular backup and backup copy run on similar schedule, they should transfer comparable amount of changes.

What is the target repository for the backup copy job? Is it a CIFS share by any chance?

I suggest contacting support to take a closer look at what happens. As I've already mentioned, if backup copy job runs right after the increment is created and manages to copy all the required data within the synchronization interval, the amount of transferred data should be similar.
