Clearing up checkpoint files after host issues

Post by spgsit5upport »

Server 2012 R2 on Hyper-V 2012 R2

Backup does work for months & then from time to time does not, out of the blue the "great":

Code: Select all

Unable to create snapshot (Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy Provider) (mode: Hyper-V child partition snapshot). Details: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_PREPARE_SNAPSHOT'. The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur. --tr:Failed to verify writers state. --tr:Failed to create VSS snapshot. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.
Make sure VM does not have 'iSCSI Software Target Storage Provider' feature installed.
Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_PREPARE_SNAPSHOT'. The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur. --tr:Failed to verify writers state. --tr:Failed to create VSS snapshot. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.
Usually errors out when VM crashes (it does happen if ie there is any problem with Hyper-V host etc)
That makes checkpoint files left over on the drive, but no checkpoints available to delete, which seems to be Hyper-V "problem"

Sorting these files, makes the backup run OK

Hi Seb,

Thanks!

Then I could just discuss it directly with support? (no really need to post it here at all in such case, right?)

The idea of forums is to share knowledge....

Now on one of the 25 VMs in the job (VM that came from same template) I get again:

09/05/2015 11:54:21 :: Unable to create snapshot (Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy Provider) (mode: Hyper-V child partition snapshot). Details: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_PREPARE_SNAPSHOT'.
The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.
--tr:Failed to verify writers state.
--tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.

09/05/2015 11:55:43 :: Make sure VM does not have 'iSCSI Software Target Storage Provider' feature installed.

09/05/2015 11:55:43 :: Retrying snapshot creation attempt (Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_PREPARE_SNAPSHOT'.
The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.
--tr:Failed to verify writers state.
--tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.)

Case ID 00914037
