Question on Virtual Appliance Transport Mode

Post by coolgod »

Please confirm that the virtual appliance transport mode is same as hotadd transport ?

i understand that when we talk about transport mode it is related to the proxy.

i read on a blog that using hotadd improves the processing rate and is better than nbd transport.

to get optimal performance, whats the best architecture:

1 veeam physical backup server + 1 veeamPROXY VM on the ESXi

or

only 1 veeam backup server VM which also act as proxy on the ESXi

here is a doc from vmware which talks about the hotadd.

The following has been quoted from this link:
Limitation with Mismatched Block Size
HotAdd cannot be used if the VMFS block size of the datastore containing the virtual machine folder for the target virtual machine does not match the VMFS block size of the datastore containing the proxy virtual machine. For example, if you back up virtual disk on a datastore with 1MB blocks, the proxy must also be on a datastore with 1MB blocks.

Correct, please review the corresponding FAQ section and user guide section.

Veeam B&R console location doesn't play huge role here.

There are a number of limitations (put by VMware vStorage API) that prevent hotadd mode to be used in some cases, this is just one of them.

when we have only a PHYSICAL VEEAM BACKUP that does everything (backup, proxy, repository, etc), if we decide to deploy a VeeamPROXY vm on the ESXi, the proxy will automatically know where the VMs to be backed up reside and how to copy them.

in my current architecture, the all in one physical server knows only 2 ESXi:
SOURCE : 192.168.x.y
TARGET: 192.168.m.n

so i don't have to tell the proxy where the VMs are located.please advise me on this.

If automatic transport mode selection is used, Veeam B&R selects the optimal transport mode based on the available backup proxy connection to the infrastructure. So there's no need to perform additional configuration, if hotadd is possible, it will be used.

I want to create a new VM with Windows Server 2008 R2 as a new PROXY on the ESXi.
This VM will be used only for this purpose.

Whats the minimum requirements in terms of virtual hardware for this VM ?

I am planning for
35 GB Hard Disk
1 GB vRAM
1 vCPU

please advise

i asked many questions on the Virtual Appliance/ HotAdd Transport Mode and was excited to implement it and see this working in action...but yesterday i landed on a page that says the "HotAdd" feature is a licensed component of VMWARE ESXi..and wont be available on ESXi 4.1 with Essentials Kit license.

Here is the link

Please advise if I understood correctly
