reusing daily backup for offsite replica

Post by avaadore »

anyone has a similar setup?
We use daily backups of our vm`s with a syntethic full once a week.
can we reuse the daily backup to copy an hourly backup to our offsite location?
kind regards,

Do you mean you want to use it to seed the initial backup copy to offsite location?

You can use a backup copy job for that purpose. Just make sure that existing connection is enough for backup copy job to process new data within hourly interval. Thanks.

Maybe i should describe our situation and wish better :)

Have: We currently do one daily backup with a synthetic full on friday. after every daily backup, the files are written to tape.
Want: additonaly to what we have, we want to have an hourly backup to our remote location.

What is the best (least impact) way to set this up?
- Create a seperate backup job to remote location which does hourly backups
- Change current backup job to hourly instead of daily and use backup copy job afterwards. (more diskspace needed?)
- Something else?

Either approach should work fine, it's up to you to decide which one serves your needs better. And, of course, you will need to set hourly schedule for source backup job, if you want to make backup copy job create hourly points. Otherwise (with daily schedule), only one restore point will be created each day by both backup and backup copy jobs.

Thanks.

thanks Vladimir,
my only problem with changing the current backup from daily to hourly, is that it currently works without any problems, i dont want to introduce new problems :)

May I ask you why do want to have hourly retention offsite? It is more common to have more frequent local backups for operational restores and then use backup copy jobs to copy them to some other (offsite) storage with longer retention for archival purposes.

Well, any backup is for disaster recovery. Anyway, you have to select one of the approaches mentioned above to implement what you're after.

*offsite* disaster recovery site :)
The backup copy job after the first hourly job would take alot of time to copy.
Will this pause the hourly backup job?

or

i could just the configure secondary destinations for this job!

Actually, the opposite. Regular backup job has a priority over the backup copy job and, in case of reverse incremental mode, running backup copy job will be paused to let backup job create its restore points. However, with forward incremental backup mode only latest restore point file should be locked and backup copy job will continue to run normally once the backup job triggers.
