v8 + ddboost experiences?

Post by luckyinfil »

Can those who've ugpraded to V8 share their experiences with DDboost and V8? Are your synthetic backup files created faster? Are your backup copy job transformations created faster with the integration of ddboost?

Can someone from Veeam explain how exactly DDboost can speed up the transformation/synthetic build progress? I thought those 2 tasks are only affected by the IOPS of the storage subsystem.

We had an extensive beta program for DDBoost integration which started in March this year, so our "marketing" numbers for synthetics and transforms (over 10x faster) are based off real world testing.

Essentially, DDboost allows us to synthesize new full backup files (during synthetic fulls and transform operations) from data already present on storage without physically moving data blocks around the storage, and operating with pointers instead... so, while we say "over 10x faster", it is important to understand that technically speaking, we are comparing existing v7 performance to "speed of doing nothing", as I like to call it ;)

Thanks for the explanation. Was the ddboost testing done only with high end appliances or all sorts? Also, the HP storeonce equivalent is on the future roadmap right?

All sorts, and our own DD boxes are low end anyway.
HP is a possibility, but let's not derail the topic ;)
