November 2014 Windows Update Rollup breaks Hyper-V backup

Post by Gostev »

Be aware that November 2014 Update Rollup for Windows Server 2012/2012R2 appears to break Hyper-V backup:
http://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/commen ... kb3000853/

Presumably, all Hyper-V backup solutions are impacted, including Microsoft's own DPM.

In Veeam B&R, the error will look like this:

Code: Select all

Unable to allocate processing resources. Errors: Failed to create snapshot for vm
I am aware of at least two support cases at this point where this pattern was noticed.

Please do not install this update to you the Hyper-V hosts until further notice.
If you have already installed, uninstalling said update fixes the issue.

Per my contact at Microsoft, installing the following hot fix on top of said Update Rollup should also help > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2996928/
I have just received this info, and we did not have a chance to test this one yet, so use at your own risk.

Note that this hot fix is said to apply to Hyper-V 2012 only (not for 2012 R2). It is unclear at the moment if 2012 R2 is also impacted by the issue.

I am hearing from some folks outside Veeam that the issue impacts both Hyper-V 2012 (KB3000853) and 2012 R2 (KB3000850). Changing the topic name accordingly for now.

After 24 hours, we still have no support cases for Hyper-V 2012 R2 and KB30000850.
Only Hyper-V 2012 and KB3000853 *seems* to be affected. We will keep monitoring.

Hello,

I can confirm that the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2996928/ hotfix does indeed fix the problem on Windows 2012.

Kind regards,

Hi there,

We have encountered this issue ("Unable to allocate processing resources...") on one of our Windows Server 2012 R2 hosts with B&R 7. Over the weekend one VM failed (even after 3 retries). Today, 2 VMs failed but they both were successfully backed up after another Retry.

For us, it is not serious enough to open a ticket over this, I just wanted to let you know that R2 really also seems to be affected by this. We have installed KB30000850 last week.

I have uninstalled the specified update from all of the hosts on my cluster and can confirm that my backups are good again.
Hope A fix for 2012 R2 will also become avaliable soon so I can re-apply the November 2014 Update Rollup.

It seems MSFT has solved the issue, according to this post: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/taylorb/archive ... stall.aspx

HI Anton.
Thanks for this.
I logged this up with a ticket 00693646 but had to find this fix myself.
I would appreciate you communicating this to your staff.
My backups were down since I upgraded to version 8 which was 6 days.
I installed KB2996928 and my backup is now working again.
Regards
John

We had a backup of a 2012 VM failing since the November Update Rollup (Hyper-V running on 2012 R2 host). We installed the updates over this weekend and the backup seems to be working again (B&R 7).
