Error: Failed to get VSS freeze state (vix mode)
Hi all,
Since I have updated to v8 I have on 6 Windows 2003R2 Servers and on 1 Windows 2008R2 the following Error in Veeam B&R.
25.11.2014 22:52:44 :: Processing "servername" Error: Failed to get VSS freeze state (vix mode). RPC function call failed. Function name: [GetFreezeState]. Target machine: ["server_ip"]. RPC error:There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper. Code: 1753
I have opened a Support Case # 00675738 on 11.11.2014 and we haven't found a solution till now...
I have followed http://www.veeam.com/kb1210 but it didn't help. (Also the mentioned MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839880)
On one of the 2003 servers I tested the solution provided by the KB. I created Reg-Key ncacn_nb_tcp, the others where existent. DNS is correct, Port 135 is answering. I had also to create the Reg-Keys for MaxUserort (10000), TcpTimedWaitDelay (120) and TcpMaxDataRetransmissions (4). After that I’ve rebooted it and tried again. The Error is the same as before.
The other thing is, this KB is for Windows 2003 systems or older but I have the Problem also on a 2008 system.
On the 2003 servers the Eventlog has this Error or none:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: (100)
Event ID: 1000
Date: 11/25/2014
Time: 12:07:47 AM
User: N/A
Computer: "servername"
Description:

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
On 2008 it looks like this:
Log Name: Application

Event ID: 8193
Task Category: None

If I disable application-aware-processing it works of course. But if I then enabel it again I do get the same Error.
Has somebody an Idea or has had a similiar or the same Error?

Hi Lukas,
Since you're using VIX API to freeze your Guest OS, then can you check VMware Tools version? Just to make sure it is not the issue here. If you switch back to network access mode, do you still see this behavior? BTW, are you using local admin account to access these VMs?
Thanks!

Hi Vitaly,
Vmware Tools are up to date. We are still using esx v5.0 u3 build 1489271.
I'm using an Domain Admin Account to access all vms.
I have switched to network mode now and I get the same Error.

What about built-in local admin on the VMs? Does it work? If you have the same error for VIX and network access, then let's see what our support team can say after investigating debug log files.Lukas Barth wrote:I'm using an Domain Admin Account to access all vms.

Re: Error: Failed to get VSS freeze state (vix mode)
Hello,
I have the same problem with one W2003R2-Server since I try to backup that server with V8. The eventlog shows the same message "Faulting application VeeamGuestHelper.exe, version 8.0.0.817, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x03c6b570."
I have tested using a local account but it did not change anything.
Thank you
Dirk

Dirk, in order to troubleshoot this issue, you need to contact our technical team as debug log investigation is required. Also it would be appreciated if you could update this topic with a solution after it gets resolved.

Re: Error: Failed to get VSS freeze state (vix mode)
Hello,
we also have the same Problem with one W2K3 Server since upgrading to V8. Reboot of the VM and the physical Backup-Server haven't no success. Deinstall of VM-Tools and re-install also no success. All others VMs having successful backups. it seems there is only a problem with w2k3. I hope there will be a solution for this issue
Thanks
Karsten

@DANIEL and @Karsten, what are your case IDs? For future posters, there is no need to mention that you have the same issue, as it, unfortunately, does not help the process of troubleshooting.

Hello
my case is resolved. Yiepeeh. I get some new VeeamVssSupport2003_x64.dll, VeeamVssSupport2003_x86.dll, VeeamVssSupport2008R2_x64.dll, VeeamVssSupportxp_x86.dll for the Directory %Programm files%\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup\VSS\WeeamGuestHelper. Same Issue here. Got a ticket it. They may want to consider just making these DLL's readily available at this point.
