HyperV B&R best practise? Cluster crashed in our datacenter

Post by nrc »

Hi,
We are moving all our systems from VMWare to HyperV 2012R2.
Some 20 minor servers are now on a 4 node HyperV cluster with a 2 node SMB3 cluster.

We are now looking how to replicate the machines to our backup datacenter.
First thought was to do replicate them with HyperV and backup them with Veeam 8.
But everytime the backup is running and HyperV wants to start the replica, the replica fails and stops.
Next try was to replicate with veeam and backup with veeam.
Next morning the smb cluster crashed, all machines stopped and after 15 minutes the smb cluster came back with a degraded Quorum and the machines were started.
This is not good in a production environment!
We have seen that happens exact at the time when the snapshot from the backup was released, so we expect that this is a problem between backup snapshot and replica snapshot.
Therefore we asked the support of best practices on HyperV and got the answer ‘read the manual’.
OK we have done that, there is a real good explanation on how the backup works, but no ‘best practices’.
As a recommendation from our HyperV consultant we have now
- Switched off the parallel processing
- Set the possible snapshot on the SMB disks to 1
- Make a backup window on the replication jobs so that it do not collide with the backup
But this makes the backup slower.

So is there anybody out there with some tips on HyperV Backup and how to replicate to a second datacenter?

Greetings

Were you able to find out the reasons of SMB cluster crash? Even if replication job tries to replicate VM which is being backed up at the moment, it shouldn't result in cluster failure. What support team said about that?
Switched off the parallel processing
I'm wondering what is the main reason for disabling parallel processing.

Thanks.

You can use replication jobs that are using backup files as a source and target them to your second datacenter. In this case there would be less load on your production cluster and storage.
