Feature Request - Email application aware backup

Post by Riyaz.Hussain »

As this product is targeted for endpoints, email application (MS Outlook) aware backup and granular restore from PST's would help a lot of people to adopt this solution and I bet this would be an big hit in the enterprise segment and opens an avenue for Veeam for the VBR business opportunities as well.

Riyaz,

As far as I remember PST file can be limited in size and not all emails would be possible to recover. If you have a virtualized Exchange server, then you can use Veeam B&R and Veeam Enterprise Manager for self-user restores. Have you considered this setup?

Thanks!

hi,
What you are looking for is a nice Veeam GUI for restoring from PST files.

But restoring a e-mail object (mail, calender, contact, note..) from a backup PST file, is possible from Endpoint backups.

1) Start the Endpoint "File Level Restore" and select the point in time to restore from.
2) When the browser opens up with the files, open up Outlook.
3) From Outlook click on the "File->Open & Export" and select "Open Outlook Data file"
4) Browse to the folder c:\VeeamFLR\<ComputerName>\<Volumes>\ to finde your restored PST file, and open it up in outlook
5) Restore what you need
6) IMPOTTANT In Outlook right-click the Opened restored PST and Close the PST (Outlook unmount)
7) Close "File Level Restore", DONE

Tested and "it just works"

Riyaz,

PST is used for archiving in case you are running Outlook + Exchange or for storing you POP3/IMAP emails. As Vitaliy said, in case of Exchange is better to have a complete Exchange backup (which could be achieved by the existing Veeam Backup and Replication) From an end user perspective recovering the complete pst file would also work and it is supported by the Endpoint even now.

Agree.
What we see out there is that organizations can not keep up with the amount of e-mails that users will save on exchange. Outlook makes it easy for users to create a local .pst file and archive there. The problem occurs when no backup is taken of the local PST files. Here Endpoint backup a great tool!

Hi,
what if we take a backup of a an exchange or physical active directory server using endpoint? Is it possible to import the backup to vbr availability suite and restore ad or email objects?

Sibin, don't forget that this is a backup tool for endpoints (laptops, personal computers, desktops). Besides, Veeam Endpoint does not do AAIP, for example, logs truncation, which is of course needed when processing SQL and Exchange Servers.

As regards the backup import question, then it will be possible to use VBR repository as a destination target for the backups, no need to import anything manually.

Hi Vitaliy,

Understood.
Would be great if those features can be included in endpoint so that any physical servers like AD can be backup up. On the other hand, the endpoint could be included as an agent in VBR suite which can be pushed to any physical machines. This would help organizations leverage the full power of VBR suite and even take/manage backups of desktops also from a single console, instead of backing up clients manually.

Actually, it does (upon successful backup, as a part of standard Microsoft VSS processing).
