Feature Request - Backup when device is off site.

Post by the_mentor »

This will be mainly used by laptops while they are off-site.
Many endpoint backup solutions offer a way for the laptop to be backed up when its not on the corporate network.

DeMentor,
Could VPN solve this case completely or I am mistaken?

VPN can solve this but it will be a lot more complicated for the user.
For example you can use outlook over VPN but most companies rather use RPC over HTTP because that makes the outlook experience simpler to the user.
the user doesn't need to connect via VPN prior to opening outlook etc.
Lets be honest most people wont even know they have VeeamEndpointBackup running on their computers let alone that they need to open VPN every time it needs to run a backup.

I hope this is a good enough explanation.

100% agree that VPN sucks, and that backup directly to corporate network via SSL is a perfectly valid feature for an enterprise desktop product.

However, it is important to understand Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE is not one. We are building it for a very different customer: for an IT Pro to backup his own desktops and laptops at work and at home. So, you will find that this product misses A LOT of features of a proper enterprise-class desktop backup solution, not just this specific one.

Maybe another approach to this issue would be to save the snapshot localy (if you need to retain point-in-time copies) untill you connect to corporate network and then transfer it to your repository.
OR
Transfer your data to Veeam Cloud Connect provider? (i didn't get my beta yet so i don't know if this can be done, but this would be a nice feature indeed)

That's actually a good idea, so basically it means that if main repository is not accessible for some reason backups should still be happening to the secondary location (which will be a local disk), correct?

Yes, kinda like "Previous versions" when using VSS snapshots. You just keep them on local disk untill you connect to corporate network, once VEB detects connection to repository, it transfers the data and deletes it from local disk. Ofc, this means you need some extra disk space on you laptop, but if you have a company policy stating you need to make a laptop backup every 1.st of the month - this could be the solution.

We have a similar requirement.

When our users are off-site, the backups can not be run against the central repository. A method to control the location of the backups would be nice so that once they return to the office (or make a connection via SSL VPN software), the missing data is uploaded to the central repository.

Yes, very good feature request indeed. We do the same in B&R v8 with SQL transaction log backup when backup repository becomes temporarily unavailable.

Is it possible to run the backup after the laptop connecting to the corporate network? User working at home 2-3 days, came back into the workplace, connecting to the corporate WIFI or LAN and the backup starting automatic?

Károly, or in other words you want to start the backup once backup destination is available, right?
