Keep 30 restore points and one full per month

Post by rereduck »

Hello,

I have Veeam V8 with a DD2500.

I want to keep 30 days of backup for the last month and I want to keep a full backup one per month for 36 months (I hope I'am clear)

Currently, I have one primary job with 30 restore points in incremental mode with synthetic full one per week.

What is the best way to do this ?

Secondary target on my primary job ? Secondary Job ?

Thanks for your help

We have a GFS retention policy intended for long-term archiving. You need to create backup copy job to set the GFS retention.
Do you have 2 backup repositories?
If yes, you need to add the initial backup job as a source for backup copy job, the second repository as a target and set the desirable retention.
Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.

I have only one backup repository and I want to keep one full by month for 36 months on the same DD2500. Is GFS is good for that ?

Can I create a backup copy job with initial backup job as source and the primary repository as target ?

Thanks

Backup copy is intended to copy a VM restore point from the source backup repository to the target backup repository.
Technically you can to the same repository if you backup copy to another folder, however, you would have duplications of same backups.

I would also suggest to accomplish your goal by creating 2 backup jobs.
First job: Forever forward incremental with retention policy = 30 restore points and daily schedule
Second job: Scheduled to run monthly, let`s say on the first Saturday with 36 restore points.

Do you want monthly backups to be Full backups or incrementals are also fine?
Thanks.

Thanks Shestakov,

Your suggestion seems to be fine for me. I'll do that

I prefer Full Backups but incrementals are also fine.

Thanks

You are welcome.
If you choose to proceed with monthly incrementals, you need to consider 2 backup jobs option, for full monthly backups both backup copy job with GFS and second job work.
