VEEAM B&R v8 using multiple proxies for drive HOTADD backup

Post by kyoon@casusa.com »

Hello all,

I have 3 host servers running vSphere 5.0, installed Veeam B&R v8 and setup two proxy servers to load balance proxy load as well as to utilize LACP(4 * 1 Gbps) configured between cisco 3750x switch to dell DR4000 backup storage.

I have a issue that backup jobs utilizing drive hotadd thru proxiy servers(10.10.10.46 and 10.10.10.47) using the same interface(Gi1/0/14) instead of using two interfaces per output from the switch below.

From the switch, If i issue a command "test etherchannel load-balance interface port-channel 1 ip 10.10.10.46 10.10.10.100" it says " Would select Gi1/0/14 of Po1"
From the switch, If i issue a command "test etherchannel load-balance interface port-channel 1 ip 10.10.10.47 10.10.10.100" it says " Would select Gi1/0/15 of Po1"

Does anyone have any idea why it's going thru just one link?

Are you referring to proxy servers pushing data through the wrong link to your repository? In order to specify the correct address you may want to change routing tables on the backup server (hosts file), so that your repository server is resolved via correct interface.

I forgot to add below output.

Statistics from 3750 switch shows it's only utilizing one interface per output below(yes, Veeam shows that both Proxies are being utilized at the time of below output)

3750stack#show int gi1/0/14 | inc 5 min
5 minute input rate 19955000 bits/sec, 5457 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 101182000 bits/sec, 8515 packets/sec
3750stack#show int gi1/0/15 | inc 5 min
5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

Hello,

I drew a visio file for clarification. Below is the link to the topology.

In my understanding, the switch should transmit the job from first proxy thru Gi 1/0/14 link. On the other hand, the job from the second proxy should go thru Gi 1/0/15.

The switch shows that it would but actual traffic is only being sent thru Gi 1/0/14.

3750stack#test etherchannel load-balance interface port-channel 1 ip 10.10.10.46 10.10.10.100
3750stack#Would select Gi1/0/14 of Po1
3750stack#test etherchannel load-balance interface port-channel 1 ip 10.10.10.47 10.10.10.100
3750stack#Would select Gi1/0/15 of Po1

3750stack#show int gi1/0/14 | inc 5 min
5 minute input rate 19955000 bits/sec, 5457 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 101182000 bits/sec, 8515 packets/sec
3750stack#show int gi1/0/15 | inc 5 min
5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

Are we talking about two separate job sessions using different gateway servers for the share? Or is this just one job session utilizing one gateway? Any given job session will only ever have one target-side data mover, which is what initiates communication over CIFS. If you have the the gateway set to 'automatic' in the repository settings, the job session will typically pick one of the proxies it's using to host the target-side data mover.

Correct, and remember in automatic mode, the first proxy mounting the SMB share becomes the gateway for all the proxies accessing that share, until a new session is initiated. Sounds like job1 starts first and so proxy1 becomes the SMB share; then job2 kicks in while job1 is still running, and so the session established by proxy1 is still open and is used also by proxy2.
You should then see the traffic also flowing from proxy2 to proxy1 since 2 is using 1 as the SMB gateway.

Thank you very much! It seems to be the best bet is to select the Backup proxy manually and run separate jobs simultaneously if i really need to load balance the network to target SMB storage.
