Bitlocker-protected .vhd attached to guest available to Veea

Post by jkettler »

Hi there. I've added a .vhd to a Hyper-V 2008 R2 VM and encrypted it with Bitlocker. Folders and files in there are visible once the drive is unlocked, as normal. All the other drives are available to Veeam but this one is not. Is a Bitlocker-protected .vhd supported for veeam B&R?

Thanks!

Can you please clarify what do you mean available to Veeam or not? Do you refer whether these drives are backed up or not? Or you do not see anything when doing FLR from the backup of this VM?

Sorry for the late reply. Was waiting for SP1.

Referring to both your scenarios. I don't know that the drive is available to Veeam (it shows dozens of SCSI volumes, I just select "All".)

I don't see the drive available when I do a FLR either.

Thanks!

I would not expect it to work, as or file level recovery, the volume is mounted from backup to B&R server, which is unaware of Bitlocker keys. Thanks!

Yikes, that's disappointing to hear. Bitlocker-encrytped .vhds are pretty common in our cloud infrastructure.

Well, honestly - if this worked, it would mean that Bitlocker is not doing what it was designed to do ;) that is, prevent malicious users from being able to open VHD copied off Hyper-V host's storage.

Regardless of OS, files from encrypted volumes can be recovered using Instant Recovery.

I was able to restore the Bitlocker-encrypted .vhd from Veeam via "Restore VM files...", attach it to another VM, and unlock it with the Bitlocker key. I had to install the Bitlocker features on that VM but it was good to go. That works for us! There wasn't any indication Veeam was backing that drive when I was looking for it during a FLR.
