Media Set Creation

Post by ocky72 »

Hi

We've finally got round to implementing tape backup on Veeam and I have a question about media sets.

We have a pool for monthly reference tapes and the idea was that all the pertinent data has it's weekly full backups sent to that pool, ideally with a media set being created per month.

However with the maximum time frame for a new media set being 1 week (daily on one specific day) there seems to be no way to do this.

Has anyone any suggestions? Just concerned that if we left the pool set to "always continue using the current media set" in the event of a disaster we would have to catalog up to 7 years worth of tapes (our retention time!).

Thanks in advance

If you're willing to send full backup to tapes once a week, why doesn't weekly mediaset work for you? One mediaset that stores week worth of .vbks. Thanks.

Because we really want a monthly tape set for storage rather than 4 sets per month.

We have to keep 7 years worth of data, so 84 sets would be better than 336 sets of tapes.

Hmm, what about running a tape job on monthly basis and selecting "Create mew media set for every backup session"? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply - That could work, but it would require us to increase our retention settings on the backups to disk to keep the 4 full backup points so that the tape job has a chance to back them up.

Additionally we would need to add the full backups to our normal media pool (which currently covers the incrementals on these jobs) in case we lost our disk backups in the meantime, thus requiring more tapes on the weekly sets (which are retained for a month).

Is there any way to manually close off a media set and start a new one?

No. So, you should stick to one of the described approaches whichever one asks your requirements best. Thanks.

In which case I guess this becomes a feature request to enhance the media set creation so that it allows monthly creation as well as weekly.

I'll submit a support case.
