Hyper-V Host Backup

Post by mattpayne »

Will Endpoint be a valid/supported method of backing up Hyper-V hosts?

Veeam B&R is great for the virtual machines, but Id still like a non-bodge way to backup my hosts

What edition do you use for your Hyper-V host, server core or a full blown server? Anyway, keep in mind that Veeam solution is targeted to endpoints and personal computers. Thanks!

the hosts are 2012 Standard with GUI running a mixture of Veeam Backup Essentials 7.x and 8.x

the target for endpoint is client machines, but it would be so handy to have a single vendor solution for our B&R.

My environment is a number of totally separate sites running a single host - whilst the host config isn't overly exotic and the data pretty static we are required by local government regulation to have backups of everything - including the hosts. previously we use Backup Exec which while (putting it mildly) is clunky was a single solution.

now I have to run a Windows server backup for the host and Veeam for the VM's which satisfies the regs, but is a little scrappy!

Yeah, that sounds about right for BE ;)

mattpayne,
Aside from the Endpoint is not being designed for backing up physical servers note - since it is BETA, and our QA team have not tested such scenario, I wound stay away from setting up Endpoint on Hyper V production hosts. At least until GA (…and the confirmation from QA team that Endpoint behaves well).

Any more on this?

Server 2012 R2 is a supported OS to run on, and all other physical servers I tested it on behaved just fine. But Hyper-V host of course is a bit more sensitive matter...

As a follow up to this post and the one Mike linked to, it is still working strong. Granted I have not had to do a bare metal recovery on my Hyper-V host yet but the jobs complete and I have done file level restores without issue.

VEB works OK on the Hyper-V host, but there is one gotcha:

If one uses CSV & does create recovery iso on the Hyper-V host with CSV, then wimmount.sys driver gets loaded which interferes with CSV (MS software interferes with MS software!) putting it into Redirected mode

Code: Select all

Cluster Shared Volume 'CSV-MD' ('CSV-MD') has identified one or more active filter drivers on this device stack that could interfere with CSV operations. I/O access will be redirected to the storage device over the network through another Cluster node. This may result in degraded performance. Please contact the filter driver vendor to verify interoperability with Cluster Shared Volumes.
And that makes everything tragically slow

If you do need to make iso on the host, then make sure to unload & disable the driver (ie with Nirsoft serviwin)

Seb, does this apply to both 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 Hyper-V servers?

It is not a tip, it is a report of a bug, so please treat it like that and correct it

Seb,
We’ve confirmed the described behavior and decided to add the ‘safety trigger’ dialog message when they such situation is detected. Thanks for all your help!
