An Issue with Veeam and Microsoft De-Duplication

Post by rdvtx »

We have the following setting:
A Server on site with Veeam Backup & Replication 7
The backup schedule is a follows:
- Daily backups to an E: drive with 21 days of restore points
- Backup copy jobs to the same server on the G:\ drive which has general purpose Microsoft De-Duplication enabled on the volume. Reversed incremental backup
- Backup copy jobs to an off-site server also with general purpose Microsoft de-duplication enabled on the volume. Reversed incremental backup
We keep the following restore points on the backup copy jobs:
Weekly: 5
Monthly: 3
Quarterly: 4
Yearly: 1
We offload the Yearly backups to Tape.

Currently we have the following Microsoft De-duplication settings:
- Data deduplication: General Purpose file server
- Deduplicate files older than (in days): 1
- Background optimization enabled
- Throughput optimization enabled every day at 09:00 with duration of 9 hours.
We modified the scheduled task for the throughput optimization to:
%systemroot%\system32\ddpcli.exe enqueue /opt /scheduled /vol * /priority high /throttle none /memory 85

The problem we face is that when for example a quartly backup takes place because it also creates the weekly and monthly backups around the same time. The de-duplications can’t keep up and the volume fills up with too much data at once.

So the questions are,

- Is there a way to prevent Veeam from creating multiple backups at the end of a month / quarter or year?
- And what are the best settings for Veeam and Microsoft De-duplication in our case?

Never mind the multiple backups, it looks like veeam only stores the overlapping backup once. Now we just need to find out why the disks gets filled up at the end of the month/quarter.

Correct, GFS restore point will be marked both as weekly and monthly, for example, if both are scheduled at the same day.
