Restore running off Network and not SAN to SAN
I have set the proxy to SAN mode and deselected use Network mode for fail over.
The restore rate is 75MB/s (for a SAN to SAN restore)
03/02/2015 11:18:34 Preparing next VM for processing
03/02/2015 11:18:34 Using source proxy VMware Backup Proxy [nbd]
It seems to be running off the network - utalisation is high.
The SAN LUN is presented to the ESX host and BAckup Proxy.
thanks

Re: Restore running off Network and not SAN to SAN
Do your VMs have thin or thick disks? Please be aware that direct SAN restore is only possible with thick disks.

Correct, only thick disks can be restored using direct SAN mode. Also, you cannot select a transport mode for restoration, it is selected automatically.

The original Datastores are thin, the VM's are thick - the recovery Datastores are Thick.

Aren't you performing incremental restore (quick rollback)?

Then something else is preventing direct SAN, restore job logs should tell the reason, so please ask support for the logs review.

Re: Restore running off Network and not SAN to SAN
I know it's a stupid question but are you using version 8? SAN restores is a new feature not available in previous versions...

Yes!
direct SAN restores are available only on v8, for v7 you should have a virtual proxy and use it for restores leveraging hotadd, otherwise restores will always happen using network mode, that is slower.

Re: Restore running off Network and not SAN to SAN
Almost 40% of our customers already upgraded to v8, and we already released patch 1. No major issue has raised since its release, so yes I will say it's imho a rock solid release.

Re: Restore running off Network and not SAN to SAN
Upgraded to V8 @ Patch applied
Not using the Network anymore..
03/02/2015 14:54:28 Using source proxy VMware Backup Proxy [san]
Restore is running @ 113MB/s
Does this sound right?
Also how many multiple restores should i be able to run at the same time?
Is restoring to and from EVA6100 - SAN is only used for backups.

Sounds good indeed!
I'm not sure if and what is the limit on concurrent san restores, need to check.

Re: Restore running off Network and not SAN to SAN
That is controlled by number of simultaneous tasks proxy and repository can handle. As far as I'm concerned, there is no additional limit specific for Direct SAN restore. Thanks. Also how many multiple restores should i be able to run at the same time?
