Re: backup modes vs. repository types
I understand how works these backup modes in case Backup Repository type = "Microsoft Windows Server" - Merge and Synthetic full operations are performed locally on Windows Server.
But, in case Backup Repository type = "Shared folder", it can not be done locally.
Or you can recommend NAS with built-in Veeam-agent?

In this case, a gateway server will do everything. Thus, it's recommended to have a machine located closer to a share as a gateway server. Thanks.

What is "gateway server"? Its a "Backup Proxy", or something else?

Any Windows server that has access to the shared folder and is located close it (in terms of network topology). Could be a proxy as well.

Re: backup modes vs. repository types
Ok.
I think that in this case the speed of Merge or Synthetic Backup will decrease dramatically..
Maybe, because most commercial NAS based on Linux, it is possible to install to NAS the Veeam agent? (and thus transform Backup Repository type from "Shared folder" to "Linux Server")?

Re: backup modes vs. repository types
Only in case the Linux installed on the NAS supports SSH and Perl, since these are required to deploy Veeam data mover agent.
