Amazon VTL and tape retention (deleting tapes)

Post by Meyercord »

Is there any way with the Amazon Virtual tape Library/Virtual Tape Shelf to have tapes automatically deleted when they reach the end of their retention period? For example, Say we have a 3 year retention requirement. We write virtual tapes to Amazons VTL and then those tapes are moved out to the VTS in Glacier. What happens after 3 years? Do I have to manually search for tapes in VEEAM with expired retention dates and then compare that list to the barcodes in Glacier, manually delete them, then go back to VEEM and mark the tapes as deleted? This sounds like a huge chore to do it every month.

Is there any alternative? Could VEEAM talk directly to the Amazon VTS to request deletion after the retention period expires?

Hello Meyercord,
Unfortunately, it is not possible. Exporting tape media to VTS is the same as physically unloading the media from the hardware library. Once tape got exported tape service can’t rotate it.

You can use VBR Tape Vaulting functionality and Veeam One to create a report for tapes that can already be overwritten.
