Where are Master, Model, MSDB in SQL Item Restore

Post by JWright »

Why can't I find the SQL System databases in the SQL Explorer. If I want to recover Master must I do it at the file level?

Yes, system DBs are not shown in Veeam Explorer for SQL and can be restored via FLR.

[MERGED] SQL Master and MSDB question

Post by PNWMtnBiker »

The DB admin at my place of work is telling me master and msdb databases are not being backed up, according to some SQL report he is running.

When I start a SQL application restore, those particular DB's do not list and the rest of the databases do. But, myself not being a DBA and not knowing specifically how those system databases work, should I be seeing them in the restore list or do they truly get skipped over?

I do see them in a windows file restore, which I would expect.

Just need some more knowledge on this, thanks!

Jon, please see above. System databases are excluded by default in VESQL, however you should be able to restore database files and then open them manually.

Does this mean the DBA team still have to use SQL backup tools to backup the system databases to disk and then they will be backed up as files as part of the Veeam backup job?

Thanks

Actual database files are included in the image-level backup, as any other file on the system - so no need for other backups.
