Remote Repository Best Practices

I'd be ok with a link to the answer...I've not been able to find it.

Site 1 holds Veeam B&R 8 server.

Sites 2-5 have Veeam Proxies.

Best practices for backup repositories for remote sites is? Right now I am using vmdk's attached to the proxies to store my backups. Can I get better performance some other way or this the best way?

Storing backups on virtual disks not considered as best practice.
Are you going to backup VMs on those sites 2-5 using respective proxies and store backups of the VMs onsite?

Yes - each site 2-5 has it's own proxy. Each proxy has a large vmdk attached to the VM as the backup repository.
Given the storage we have - there doesn't appear any other way to present the storage to the proxy.

Also, having only one copy of backup is not the best practice as well. Please get familiar with 3-2-1 rule.
