Veeam B&R in a VM with VMFS datatstore present

Post by piedpiper »

Hi Guys,

I am just getting to grips with Veeam and I have Veeam running in a VM on 2008r2 and my VMFS datastores are presented to the VM, automount has been disabled, the volumes are 'online'.

But I rescan the server and the repositories in Veeam, but I don't think Veeam sees them? I have set my proxies to use SAN only and they start using [san] it then go to [nbd] even though I have told it not to revert to network.
Hard Disk 1 [san] then
Hard Disk 1 [nbd]

When I add new repository, select the windows server and click populate I see C: and E: but not the VMFS volumes?

What am I missing?

How did you present these VMFS volumes to the VM proxy server, via iSCSI? Do you see these volumes in disk management MMC console?

Hi Vitaliy,

Yes I have the disk MMC console sees the luns and I have put them in online mode, and thats it. So the Windows VM sees the luns.

The iscsi luns are from a IBM DS3300 iSCSI SAN

Is there a way for me to attach screen shots?

Wait I am correct in that presenting the VMFS luns to the windows Veeam backup proxy is the way to go to use Direct SAN properly?

Yes, you're correct. Please check this F.A.Q. topic > Direct SAN Access Mode

Hi,
I have read through that with a fine tooth comb! lol

If I have set it up correctly why is it starting with [san] and then backing up using [nbd] network based? *EDIT* will it show network mode, because iscsi traffic runs across the network? If so I thought the basis for Direct SAN was that it offloads everything to the SAN, so there is no traffic?

Also do the VMFS LUNs need to be in offline mode when presented to the windows server VM?

As you can guess I am pretty muddled!

There is a step by step guide by Justin Paul for configuring direct iSCSI SAN access via Microsoft Software iSCSI inititator linked in the above mentioned FAQ, please follow it exactly and it will work. If you still have issues, feel free to open a support case for assistance via webex. Thanks.
