BTRFS support?

Post by lelystad »

Is there a planned schedule for including btrfs support?
I run servers with btrfs (some in logical volumes) and I'm not able to do file level restore now.
Same question for Reiserfs V4.

Isn't BTRFS still considered experimental and unstable?

Robin, currently, you can try to leverage Instant Recovery without actually starting the VM to publish its disk from a backup on the vPower NFS datastore, and then mount the disk to any VM that can read this file system to be able to restore files from it.

New Linux filesystems tends to be labeld unstable for many years.
This does not mean they ar not usable, bad or otherwise.
BTRFS is incorporated into the kernel wich indicates Linux developers consider it usable.
If nobody strats using new files systems in less critical systems, we will never benefit from newer developments.

This does not mean i do not need to backup and restore susch a system.
So hence my wish for support for such filesystems in my back-up tooling.

Thats my current workround. Or I restore the entire machine in a sandbox.
The question (and it's answer) is import in the decision making how to set up new systems.

btrfs is a rapidly moving target at the moment. XFS at least offers the extended attributes and is preferred by some projects at the moment (ceph for example).

BTRFS support was added with V8 Patch 1, as mentioned in its release notes. If it's not working for you, then it would be best to open a support case.

Haven't got large amount of time to open a case, the flr does see the btrfs volumes but the wizard is unable to.

If you'd like to get this resolved, please open a support case for investigation. Currently, there are no known issues with BTFRS support.
