MS SQL Server backup strategy

Post by panzer »

Hi.
I am currently using Backup Exec for my MS SQL serveres: Weekly full fackup + nightly incremental + hourly transaction log.
Can this solution be replaced with Veeam B&R?

Hi Stig,

Veeam can do all of the above and this all without the need for an agent (even the log backups are agentless). You can download our solution for a 30 day trial and create a POC.

In terms of your weekly retention plan Veeam can use forward incremental (http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/h ... ackup.html) but since v8 we also have a new method called forever forward incremental which creates 1 full backup and after that forever incrementals.

In regards to log backups and restoring SQL you can find more information about our Veeam Explorer for SQL via http://www.veeam.com/microsoft-sql-server-explorer.html

How would you configure the backup job for hourly backups? Should the SQL Server have it's own job, or can it be part of a muliple-server job?

When you configure a backup job and there is an SQL server in it, Veeam has an application specific tab where you can configure when to backup the logs (every day with the normal backup, every xx minutes,...) and you can also take care of log handling along.

More information can be found via http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/v ... ssing.html

And more specific:
http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/v ... p_hiw.html
http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/v ... ntion.html
http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/v ... stats.html

It can also be part of a multiple-server job as these application settings can be configured on a per VM basis.

Thank you, this is an excellent solution. Backup Exec is now uninstalled!
