Outsource DB recovery tasks to DBA

Post by VladV »

Sorry if this has been discussed or if the information is in plain site but I am having trouble finding it.

I am looking for a way to offload the recovery tasks for our databases to our DBA. Is there a remote console or a controlled way in doing so without granting remote desktop capabilities to the backup server?

Thanks.

Hi Vlad,
you can use Enterprise Manager and create a new user there, with only Restore Operator rights, and assign him the rights to only restore SQL items.
The DBA will be able to log into the web interface, search for available DBs (without even knowing the name of VMs running them...) and start restores from here. I've presented on this topic at VeeamON 2014, you can see the video here:

Look for session VT-09.

Luca.

Hi Luca, thanks for the input and great VeeamOn session. Was hoping that there was another solution besides Enterprise Manager, something like SQL explorer remote.

One thing though regarding permissions. Is there any way in restricting a Domain Admin to be only able to restore? It seems that even if I add the user as a restore able one, it gets overridden by the group.

Regards

Yes group has priority over single users, but is a BDA also a domain admin????

In our company, yes. It is a small infrastructure that needs to be managed. He is more a domain admin than DBA but it is enough as the DB is maintained by the app provider.

Another option is to have the enterprise manager not joined to the domain and use local admins, but then any login to domain resources will fail, like for example the SQL server joined in a domain.
I understand your situation, but domain admins are not designed to be limited accounts...
