Recommendations for building a repository

Post by willrun4fun »

I am needing more space. Thinking of buying a tower case, four or 5 WD Reds, a motherboard, and maybe a disk controller.

Requirements:
I would like to just still with desktop drives
Fault tolerance for drive failures with rebuild ability
Windows 2012, 7, or Linux available. I know Windows much better if possible.

Drive, mobo, or other recommendations?

I have a four port Intel NIC here I can use, but I don't think it will really speed me up much over a 1GB link since my source is not up to task ATM.

Thoughts?

Hello Andy,
I would recommend to buy 8 WD Reds set in RAID10.
Here is a great topic describing backup repositories best practices. Please take a look.
Thanks!

I do have a Dell R715 sitting here with 6 SAS bays. I can find 1TB dell OEM drives on eBay, but wondering what the largest that it will support might be.

Andy, there is no limitation in terms of backup repository size. Described hardware should work fine.

After some reading and searching I am thinking of picking up one of these now.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

put in 6 to 8 WD or HGST 4TB drives in RAID 10 to start.
Run Server2012.

Hope it works out.
