Best Practices Veeam installation on Hyper-V Host

Post by IFP »

Hi!

Are there some recommendations for installing Veeam on the Hyper-V Host (parent partition) or should I install Veeam on a VM?
Unfortunately, there is no available physical backup server...

Thanks for your information!

Best regards,

Hi, Fabrice,

Backup server can be installed either on Hyper-V host or on Virtual Machine without any issues. Just take additional system requirements into account.

Thanks.

[MERGED] : Best Parctice, Veeam server on hyper-v

Post by hyvokar »

Hi!

I'm new to veeam with hyper-v. Our customer has a backup exec installed on their hyper-v host. Does veeam support installing veeam server on hyper-v host, or should it be installed on a guest VM? Naturally buexec will be removed.
We need to backup guest VMs on that same hyper-v host and VMs on esxi host.

Both ways are supported, so it's up to you to decide which one works best for you. Just be aware to follow system requirements that can be found here. Thanks.

My personal preference is a VM, because for maintenance and troubleshooting rebooting a VM is easier than rebooting a host. However, when using a VM for the backup server, keep in mind that if you also use it in the repository role, there are limitations for restore: https://www.veeam.com/kb2028
