Backup of Amazon AWS machines?
Hello,
Can Veeam Backup & Replication take backup of virtual machines located in Amazon's AWS?
Thank you!

Veeam B&R needs access to the ESXi/Hyper-V hosts (or access to other underlying hypervisor like with Amazon AWS) to backup VMs, so with Amazon AWS currently it is not possible. Are you planning to move your workloads there in the short term future? Thanks!

I was afraid of this...
Then it's a "no go" for us to move to Amazon - we are too happy with Veeam
What about VmWare vCloud? Do they offer host level access? I guess you can buy dedicated hardware allowing this, but probably not the cheaper "shared service" solutions?

Re: Backup of Amazon AWS machines?
We are currently hosting about 70 virtual machines for customers in our local datacenter, and are curious about moving some/everything out. But the lack of proper backup strategies (as I said, we are getting very spoiled with Veeam for many years) are holding us back, in addition to a few other issues.
Also, we have about 150 additional customers with local virtual infrastructure, and we hesitate to advice them to "go cloud" for the same reasons...

Have you considered finding some VMware IaaS service provider that uses Veeam B&R to protect your VMs, and switch your workloads to it? This way, both your on-prem and off-prem VMs will be backed up by the same solution. Should anything happen, all you need is their backup files.

Yes, that's the trend and people are looking into offloading some VMs to the cloud or to any other IaaS provider. Currently, Veeam B&R does not support backing up VMs from any public cloud. Thanks for the feedback!

However, and sorry for the sales pitch, you can find many vCloud based service providers that are using Veeam as their protection solution. So, even if you are no more in charge of the data protection, you can be assured they are using Veeam as well for your VMs.
