Yet another GFS & Backup Copy question

Post by mkolus »

First, i've read the manual and i still have doubts.

Let's say i need the following retention:

1) One daily backup for last week.
2) One weekly backup for the last month.
3) One monthly backup for the last year.

So, i've created two jobs:

1) Daily backup: Regular job

Code: Select all

Restore points to keep on disk: 7
Secondary target: GFS Backup copy job

2) GFS: Backup copy job

Code: Select all

	Copy every: 1 day.
	Restore points to keep: 7
[x] Keep the following restore points for archival purposes
		Weekly: 4
		Monthly: 12
		Quartely: 0
		Yearly: 1

My questions are:

1) Will this work as intended?

2) What "Copy every" means exactly? I see that the job runs continuously.

3) What is the number of restore points in the backup copy context? Are those daily backups or what? is it related to what i asked in the previous question?

With the described settings there will be four weekly restore points and 12 monthly ones, which seems to be contrary to what you're willing to achieve. (1 monthly, 1 weekly)
2) What "Copy every" means exactly? I see that the job runs continuously.
Take a look at this post.
3) What is the number of restore points in the backup copy context? Are those daily backups or what?
Number of restore point preserved by simple mode. With copy interval being equal to 24 hours, it's related to number of daily restore points created by backup copy job.

Thanks.

Vladimir,
In that exactly same scenario, what would the "restore points to keep" in the backup copy job (GFS) means?

He also didn´t mention anything about the set of a secondary target pointing to the GFS backup copy job in the backup jobs, is that necessary?

The number of restore points in the regular backup copy job chain, that are kept aside the specified number of GFS restore points.

You can do that if you want to link the backup job with the backup copy job.
