Microsoft Exchange Writer

Yesterday I ran a backup on a machine Windows 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010 and within minutes, the backup displayed "4/1/2015 12:34:23 PM :: Unable to release guest. Error: VSSControl: Failed to freeze guest, wait timeout" and immediately started to remove the snapshot.

I went into the Exchange machine and ran "vssadmin list writer" and it showed a lot of errors. On the Veeam's machine, I have already extended the time out value in the registry a while back. In short, I need the machine to have MS Exchange Writer working? I know it has to work for the truncating of the logs based on this link below, but the job that ran yesterday failed very quickly.

So, this seems to be a VSS issue, not a Veeam issue. Many things can cause problems with VSS, most notable being high I/O, lack of disk space or fragmentation. Luca had a great post on the following thread:

It also leads to deeper diagnosis on technet.

I did this modification a while ago and changed to 1800000. Last week I updated patch 4 for version 7 and just checked and it now has 18874368 (decimal).

Had you opened a support case for this? Even if it isn't exactly a Veeam issue, you should open support cases for technical issues rather than relying entirely on the forum. Please post a case number when you do.

Anyway, I'm not sure if you were looking at a cached version of KB1377 or what, but the new version explains how "Failed to freeze" and "Failed to prepare" are two different errors, and only the preparation timeout is configurable. Your error is more likely to be this:
