wan accelerator - no known os types found

Post by frankive »

Customer is running Windows 2012 R2 Essentials.
Veeam 8 with patch 1 installed.

Trying to populate wan accelerator cache with the local job it says "no known os type found".
I see this is an issue which is supposed to be addressed in patch1.
What could cause this?

and another question: Is it possible to change the wan accelerator size without causing any trouble?

Frank, could you please describe your actions in more detail, how have you tried to populate the cache?

Yes, you can change the cache size, just make sure it is not currently being used at that moment.

I go to backup infrastructure - wan acceleratos. right click the accelerator. choose populate cache. and select the only local repository which containts the 2012 R2 Essentials VM.
Then it tries to fill the cache, but at the end it says no known guest os found.

Alsso tried to remove wan accelerator, re-add it, delete the physical cachefolder etc.

Any chance the backup is encrypted? Was it created while VM was up and running and with application-aware image processing enabled?

Please double check they really do (with the build number). We often see customers in support claiming they have the patch installed when they do not.

Backup is encrypted. (It is enabled in the local job but 100% visible through restore. If we move the backupfiles and import on another server we have to type the decryptpassword) . Is this the issue?
Yes, backup was created while the vm was up and running and with application-aware image processing enabled.

They have build 8.0.0.917

it is a small customer, so i will configure a full active backup with encryption and try to populate the cache with this job.

I can confirm this was caused by the encryption.
The new job full backup of the system drive only would populate the wan accelerator just fine.
Thanks!

Were you trying to populate cache on the target side from an encrypted seeded backup?

No. Were trying to populcate the source wan accelreator (custom side). Somehow it didnt recognize the os.
After running a new active full backup without the encryption on the backup it successfully populated the wan accelerator with 2012 R2

OK. While this sounds like a bug, what was the point of populating the source WAN accelerator anyway? The cache is used by target WAN accelerator only...

I was under the impression that you need to populate cache on both customer AND service provider site? How does the service providers compare which blocks to transfer if it doesnt have a cache to compare FROM?

Source side has VM disks digests for that purpose.

We don't need actual cache contents at source (where we already have all the VM data readily available anyway). It is target where we need to cache the recurring data blocks, so that we don't have to transfer them over WAN again, instead just instructing target accelerator to obtain them from the local cache.

I have enhanced the description on the corresponding step of WAN accelerator creation wizard in the Update 2 to make it more obvious.

Pretty amazing that a 1 billion $ company is listening to small independent consultants and change their product on the fly. Gotta love #Veeam! :)
