Backup up SQL Express

Post by PNWMtnBiker » 1 person likes this post

How does backup for a SQL Express database work? Will Veeam do the same database backup that it would for a full SQL server?

I should also add, being the free version I don't feel like I can expect the same SQL restore capabilities that I would with a full version. Likely nothing more than log truncation?

If we are talking about VeeamZIP capability, then it does not allow log shipping/truncation or any other advanced settings of the backup job. Please take a look at our online user guide for more details regarding how application-aware backups are done> VM Guest OS Quiescence

I think he is asking if transaction log backup works for SQL Express databases.

Ah... in this case SQL Server edition does not matter, you will be able to truncate logs for databases hosted by SQL Server Express as well.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear enough, yes the transaction log backup works fine as well as log truncation. I mean backing up SQL DB's and being able to restore a DB using SQL explorer in the same way that it would work for SQL Standard or Enterprise.

SQL Server edition does not matter here as well. If you're after differences between free and paid Veeam B&R editions, then please review this comparison.

ok, so if my Windows VM contains the SQL Server Express edition, can I just create normal Backup Job and then select the application-aware backup option ?

Correct. You can additionally set SQL-specific option, using corresponding tab. Thanks.

Yes, this is what I was trying to say, thank you. This is exactly how the job is setup.

This is all coming from our DBA who tells me the DB's aren't being backed up on this VM which is SQL Express. I tried to test a SQL restore on this VM and nothing came up in the SQL explorer vs. how it does if I test a restore on a VM with SQL Standard or Enterprise.

Well, I'm fuzzy if something happened but I tested doing a SQL restore with this SQL Express server again just now from last nights backup and the DB's are showing up this time in the explorer.

How can I link a domain service account on a Veeam backup job protecting a windows VM holding a SQL express instance? I've already granted local SQL db rights permissions to this domain service account but don't know how/where to associate it on the Veeam application-aware backup job. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks...

You have to add your credentials on this step in the Backup Job.

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

If you choose credentials in the drop down menu, they will be used for all vms in the job.
If you want to have dedicated credentials only for this vm, then click on the „credentials“ Button to choose credentials dedicated to your sql express vm.
